How to Make Big Dollars by Collecting Thermocouples

Let’s start today’s post with a riddle for you to answer . . .

What looks like spaghetti but is made of platinum, tungsten, gold and other precious metals?

We are willing to bet we didn’t fool you with that one. The answer to the riddle is thermocouple wire.

Granted, thermocouples don’t always look like spaghetti. If you find them neatly sealed in their original packaging, they can look like little coils of wire. But more often than not, you will find them in tangled masses in your factory or place of business. But don’t be fooled. Even though they look like worthless scrap, they can be worth much more than you expect. Depending on where they were used, they can contain platinum, rhodium, palladium, gold, nickel, and even tungsten. So don’t turn up your nose when you find thermocouple wire. Gather it up and call Specialty Metals Smelters and Refiners. We can test it for you, recycle the precious metal it contains, and pay you promptly.

What You Need to Know about Thermocouples

Thermocouple wire, which is made of at least two different metals, is used to either monitor or control temperatures remotely. If you own a factory where ceramics are manufactured at high temperatures on a production line, for example, you can’t stick a thermometer there to keep track of how hot things are. But you can put a sensor there and run a thermocouple wire from it to a measuring device that is located some distance away from where the high heat is.

Thermocouple wire can also be run to remote devices that control temperatures. One common example? A thermostat that is used to control the temperature in your kitchen oven; a thermocouple wire runs from the interior of your oven to the stove’s control panel and when the temperature reaches the level you have set, the heating elements in the oven shut down.

So you see, thermocouples are just about everywhere.
