Know What Your Jewelry Is Worth Before You Give It Away

Your son or daughter will graduate high school or college in a few weeks. And you’re thinking, “Wouldn’t it be nice if I gave that grad an old item of family jewelry that’s been sitting around for years?”

It could be grandpa’s old gold pocket watch, or a wedding ring that once was worn by your mother. Well, aren’t you being generous? Yes, you are. But before you make that generous gift, here’s a piece of advice:

Call us to find out the value of those items before you give them away

There are several reasons why you should. One, of course, is that the items of jewelry you are thinking of giving away could be worth much more than you expect. And if they are, you should know that, and so should the recipient of the gift you are considering. If the items you are giving away turn out to be worth a lot of money, they should be insured. And if they are worth an awful lot of money, you might want to sell them or recycle the precious metals they contain and give cash to the recipient of your gift instead.

Wisdom About the Value of Old Watches and Jewelry

You can’t determine the value of old watches and jewelry just by looking at them. The following considerations could add to their value:

  • An especially large amount of gold or platinum. This is the metallic value, and you should know what it is before you give anything away.

  • Any collectible value. If a watch or a piece of jewelry was made by a prestigious company or jeweler, its value could exceed that of the precious metals it contains. You need to know that too.

  • Extra metallic value that is not evident to the naked eye. Did you know, for example, that not all gold-plated costume jewelry contains the same amount of gold? Some older items of costume jewelry, even if they seem only decorative, contain enough gold to be well worth recycling!
