Where Are You Most Likely To Find Gold in Electronic Devices?

We have written on this blog that gold can be reclaimed from electronic devices such as computers, computer tablets, smartphones, and even remote controls that came bundled with televisions and other devices commonly found in the home. It seems that gold is waiting to be reclaimed in almost any kind of electronic device you find.

In today’s post, let’s dig a little deeper, by answering this question . . .

Where specifically can gold be found inside those devices?

Let’s take a closer look.

Gold and other precious metals can be found in various electronic devices, particularly in their circuitry and connectors. So when you pull apart electronic devices, here are some common places inside where these metals can be found:

In printed circuit boards (PCBs) - PCBs are found in almost all electronic devices. They contain thin layers of copper tracks that connect various electronic components. Gold is also used for plating the contacts and connectors on PCBs because of its excellent conductivity and resistance to corrosion.

In central processing units (CPUs) - CPUs, found in computers and smartphones, contain small amounts of gold. Gold wires are used to connect and bond the silicon chips to the substrate layer, and gold plating is often applied to the pins or contacts you will find on the edges of CPUs.

In memory chips and modules (also called random access memory) – These modules and other memory devices may contain gold-plated connector pins for enhanced conductivity.

In connectors and switches - Various connectors, such as USB connectors, audio jacks, and HDMI ports, often have gold plating on their contacts to ensure reliable electrical connections and prevent corrosion.

In mobile phones - Smartphones contain several components that may contain gold, such as the printed circuit boards, connectors, and pins. Gold is used due to its excellent conductivity and durability.

In hard disk drives (HDDs) – The hard drives used in computers usually have gold-plated connector pins and internal circuitry.

It's important to note that while gold and other precious metals can be found in electronic devices, the quantities are relatively small. Extracting these metals from electronic waste requires specialized processes and is typically done on a large scale for economic viability.
