An article in The New York Times on September 28th (“There’s Gold in Them Thar Braes”) reports that a new gold rush is currently taking place in Scotland. That’s right, Scotland. Stephen Castle, who wrote the article, interviewed several prospectors who are currently panning for gold in Scotland. One of the men he interviewed reported that he is actually not hoping to strike it rich. He has a more modest plan for what he would like to accomplish by standing in a stream for hours panning for gold.

In years past, it was relatively difficult to plate a bright, shiny new layer of gold or silver onto other items. To do it, you had to either immerse the items to be plated in a plating tank or, in some cases, use an electrified plating brush to apply a thin new layer of gold or silver.

Over the years, people have made all kinds of common-looking objects out of gold, platinum and silver. If you’re not alert, you could pass them by when you search for precious metal items in antique stores, estate sales, and even online auctions

If you’ve spent any time poking around antique stores, estate sales, or online, you already know that liquor flasks are not hard to find.
