Investing Lessons from the Most Valuable Pieces of Platinum Jewelry in History

If you’re thinking about diamonds, you will quickly remember some incredibly valuable diamonds that have become legendary because of their size and perfection – historical gemstones like The Hope Diamond, the Koh-I-Noor Diamond, The Great Star of Africa, and others. And if you are thinking about famous items made of gold, you will probably think first of the burial mask of King Tut, just for starters.

But if you ask about the most famous and valuable objects that have been made of platinum, chances are you will draw a blank. That’s probably because platinum was so rare in ancient times that few if any ultra-valuable items were fashioned from it. There were golden crowns and scepters in ancient times. But platinum? Not so many. And even in the last 100 years when platinum has become more common, few extravagant pieces of jewelry have been made from it.

But Consider the Following Big-Ticket Items of Platinum Jewelry

What are the most valuable pieces of platinum jewelry ever made? While there might not have been too many ultra-valuable pieces of platinum jewelry over the years, here are a few notable exceptions to the rule . . .

  • "The Graff Pink" Diamond Ring: This platinum ring features a rare and internally flawless pink diamond weighing 24.78 carats. It was sold at a Sotheby's auction in 2010 for more than $46 million, making it one of the most expensive pieces of platinum jewelry ever.

  • "The Winston Blue" Diamond Ring: The Winston Blue is a pear-shaped fancy vivid blue diamond weighing 13.22 carats. It was set in a platinum ring and sold at a Christie's auction in 2014 for $23.8 million.

  • "The Hope Diamond" Necklace: The Hope Diamond, a famous blue diamond weighing 45.52 carats, has been set in various platinum necklaces throughout its history. While it is challenging to assign a specific value, the diamond itself is estimated to be worth several hundred million dollars. The platinum necklace that holds it? Not so much.

  • "The Cullinan Diamond Brooch": This platinum brooch features the largest gem-quality diamond ever discovered, known as the Cullinan Diamond. The diamond was cut into several pieces, and the largest, called the Great Star of Africa, weighing 530.2 carats, is set in this brooch. The brooch is considered to be of significant historical and cultural value.

  • "The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond": A gift from Richard Burton to Elizabeth Taylor, this stunning platinum necklace features a 33.19-carat diamond known as the Krupp Diamond. It was sold at a Christie's auction in 2011 for over $8.8 million.

Those are just a few examples of valuable platinum jewelry pieces. But what can you learn from them if you are someone who likes to make money by investing in platinum?

Lessons Learned from These Famous Platinum Items

Platinum plays second fiddle to gemstones. As you go hunting for platinum jewelry and platinum scrap, look for large and flashy gemstones, not intricate jewelry designs. Over the centuries, famous goldsmiths like Benvenuto Cellini and others have shown off their incredible skills by fashioning intricate and beautiful pieces of jewelry from gold.

Platinum, not so much so. A nice piece of platinum jewelry might be a simple engagement ring with pins that hold and display a diamond, maybe surrounded by small emeralds or other gemstones.

But the point is that when you go looking for platinum scrap and jewelry, you will find it by looking for the gemstones, not the platinum.

And when you find platinum, we can reclaim it for you and pay you for it at high current trading prices. Give our platinum refiners a call at 800-426-2344 to learn more.
