What You Need to Know to Make Money Recycling Platinum-Rhodium Scrap

As we write today’s post, platinum is trading on the London Fix for $1,244.00. That’s a nice high price. And what about Rhodium? It’s trading for $24,500.00.

No, that is not a typo . . . rhodium really is trading for the sky-high price of $24,500.00 per Troy Ounce.

So if platinum and rhodium are trading for prices that high, how much are alloys of platinum and rhodium trading for? An awful lot of money, right? Well, yes. But those prices can be driven down by certain factors, including . . .

  • Platinum-rhodium alloys, as you might expect, are generally made up of mostly platinum, with only a tiny percentage of rhodium.

  • Many platinum-rhodium alloys contain other metals too – like thermocouples and other items that can contain copper and silver.

What Items Can We Recycle for You, and What Are They Worth?

  • Platinum-Rhodium alloy wire, sheet, rods, foil, tube, mesh, etc.

  • Platinum-Rhodium catalysts that are used in industrial processes

  • Platinum-Rhodium thermocouple wire

  • Labware containing platinum group metals, including laboratory crucibles, evaporation dishes, electrodes, tongs, mesh screens and inoculating loops

And here’s an interesting use of platinum-rhodium alloys. They have recently found increasing usage in factories that make glass fiber materials. How? The alloy is fashioned into tiny nozzles through which molten glass is shot, forming tiny glass threads that can be woven together. Why is platinum-rhodium used in that application? Because the molten glass must be heated to an extremely high temperature – and platinum-rhodium alloys can withstand high heat for long periods of time without degrading.
