Make Money Recycling MLCC Chips

Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs or MLCC chips), which are small electronic components made of alternating ceramic and metallic layers, can be found in many applications today.

  • What they do . . . When they are inserted into a circuit, they impede the flow of electricity for a time, then release it at a controlled rate.

  • Where they are found . . . You will find MLCCs just about anywhere there is an electronic circuit or component. They are found, for example, in entertainment systems, in cars, in air conditioning and heating units, and in many other places.

  • Where they are found in cars . . . a modern car can contain as many as 10,000 of them in circuits that monitor engine functions, control advanced safety systems, control cabin temperatures, and more.

  • What they look like . . . MLCCs can be as small as 1/32” long, or as large as ½”. In many cases, the size is determined by the outer casing that covers them. And in some settings, a number of them can be attached to each other end to end.

  • What precious metals they contain . . . it depends on their use. But many of the most commonly used MLCCs contain both silver and palladium.

Do the Printed Circuit Boards You Have Contain MLCCs? And How Many?

There are online directories of MLCCs that provide information on their functionality as capacitors. But because they are used in larger printed circuit boards and components (and sometimes housed in protective coatings) they are not always visible to the naked eye.

But if you have a large number of circuit boards that you pulled from automobiles, industrial assembly equipment, and other places, chances are they contain MLCCs along with other internal circuitry that can contain silver and gold.
