Make These Items with High Precious Metal Scrap Value Your Top Collecting Priority

A number of factors make certain kinds of precious metal scrap more desirable investments than others.

These factors include the density and distribution of precious metal within the scrap. If one ounce of gold is distributed through two pounds of scrap, for example, that is a desirably, high-density form of scrap. If that same single ounce of gold is distributed through two tons of dirt or sand, that makes for a less desirable investment. (It is easier to ship and process two pounds of material than it is to ship and process two tons.)

Other factors distinguish desirable investments too. One is availability, with more available forms of scrap being more desirable. Another is the danger of handling the scrap. (Did you know that some compounds that contain gold also contain arsenic?)

High-Value Varieties of Precious Metal Scrap

So certain forms of scrap have higher scrap value than others do. But let’s break it down and keep it simple in today’s post by giving you a list of items that have high scrap value.

  • Used gold sputtering targets that have outlived their life in industrial plating operations.

  • Older gold-filled eyeglass frames, which contain more gold than newer gold-plated frames that are made today.

  • The connecting contact pins that can be snipped from the edges of printed circuit boards.

  • Platinum laboratory crucibles and other platinum lab and testing equipment.

  • Unused implantable devices, including pacemakers and defibrillators.

  • Cadmium and platinum probes, electrodes, and other pieces of medical testing equipment.

  • Scrapings from inside gold plating tanks and their supply pipes.

  • Platinum mesh and screens from industrial tanks and plating machinery.

  • Gold and platinum scrap from jewelry manufacturing and repair facilities.

  • Platinum and gold rings, including engagement and wedding rings.

  • Gold chains and gold jewelry findings of all kinds, especially 14 karat.
