Where Can You Get the Best Advice and Information before Selling Gold and Gold Scrap?

Where should you turn for advice if you have gold or gold scrap you would like to sell?

Here are some options, with our expert advice on how and when to use them.

Small Pocket-Size Gold Testing Kits

These small, pocketable kits are widely available. They have a small abrasive stone and several small squeeze bottles that contain testing fluid. You rub the piece of gold or scrap you want to test on the stone, squeeze some testing fluid onto it, and get a quick reading on whether the item you are testing contains gold, and in what karat (purity) rating.

The pros: These kits are portable and can serve as a good rough indicator of whether the items you have found contain gold.

The cons: These kits are not good at testing alloys. In other words, if you get a reading that you are testing an item that is only 10K gold, the kit will not tell you what other metals are in the alloy.

Your Local Jewelry Shop or “We Buy Gold” Retail Location

You walk in and show your item to someone behind the counter, who examines it and often uses the kind of small gold-testing kit that we described just above. That salesperson tells you the karat rating of the item and makes you a cash offer on the spot.

The pros: If you need to quickly liquidate gold to raise money, these options can be helpful.

The cons: You have to accept the verbal statement from the buyer. Plus when a salesperson or representative at one of these locations makes you an offer, he or she is building in a profit margin for his business. That, after all, is why his company is in business – they make money buying items for less than they are really worth, and then sell them at full market value.

Specialty Metals Smelters and Refiners

You call us toll-free at 800-426-2344 and speak with one of our professional precious metal refiners. In many cases, you show him or her a digital photo of your item. You are then told exactly what you need to do to send your scrap or other items to us to be tested. When we receive your items, we promptly issue you a professionally prepared report that explains exactly what your items contain. If they contain gold mixed with other metals like silver, copper, or zinc, for example, your report will explain that. Your items will also be valued and if you want to sell them to us, we will issue you prompt payment. Also, if you want to wait and have us reclaim the gold they contain at a later time, we will hold them for you, until you instruct us to process them and pay you for the gold (and other metals) they contain.

The pros: We are convenient – only a phone call away. You are dealing with a company that gives you complete information on all the metals that your scrap contains, along with their value at current trading prices. And you are assured that you are dealing with a company that does business fairly – one with many years of treating customers fairly and honestly.

The cons: There really aren’t any. So if you have gold scrap of any kind and would like to know what it contains, what it is worth, and want to sell it at current trading prices, we invite you to give us a call at 800-426-2344.
